Chain extenders and adjusting your necklace fitUpdated a month ago
Most of our necklaces and bracelets include a built-in 2 inch (5 cm) extender chain at the clasp, giving you flexibility in how the piece sits.
What an extender does
An extender lets you lengthen the chain by fastening the clasp further along the extender links. An 18 inch necklace can be worn anywhere from 18 to 20 inches, for a lower drop or a more relaxed fit over clothing.
What an extender cannot do
An extender cannot make a chain shorter than its stated length. If a necklace is 45 cm, the extender can take it longer than 45 cm, but not below it.
If your necklace sits lower than you would like:
- A non-personalized piece can be exchanged for a shorter length within 30 days, or you can keep it and take store credit toward the right size. See our Returns article.
- A personalized piece is crafted to the length ordered, so please double-check the chain length before purchasing. Our Sizing Help article has a guide to how each length sits.
Choosing the right length next time
As a general guide: 40 cm (16 in) sits at the collarbone, 45 cm (18 in) just below it, and 50 cm (20 in) lower still. When in doubt between two lengths, most customers are happier sizing up, since the extender only adds length.
